Introduction

The Department of Safety Health and Environmental Engineering (SHEE) was established at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) in 1992. SHEE offers a comprehensive program leading to Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD and In-service master program degrees. During the academic year of 2016, the Department has approximately 259 undergraduate students and 189 graduate students.

1. Department of Safety Health and Environmental Engineering-Undergraduate degree

(1) Educational Objectives: To enable students to have basic knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering expertise

a. To enable students to become professional engineers of safety, health and environmental engineering according with the industry needs

(2) Core Capabilities:

2. Department of Safety Health and Environmental Engineering Master Degree/Ph. D Degree

3. Department of Safety Health and Environmental Engineering MS in Safety, Health and Environmental Technology and Management

ii. Teaching Features

For the purpose of promoting the applied ideas of environmental engineering and industrial safety technology, focusing on the problems of regional environmental pollution and the policies about industrial pollution, the Department mainly emphasizes on the teaching fields such as water resource engineering, wastewater treatment, air pollution control, hazardous air pollutant control, hazardous wastes treatment, noise and vibration abatement, industrial safety, industrial health, toxic substances transport and their risk. Furthermore, the Department strives to develop the state-of-the-art technology on environmental pollution control, safety and risk management, environment and resources, disaster prevention, and biological technology as research priorities. Collaborating with the four research centers at Yuntech—the Research Center for Industrial Pollution Prevention, the Center for Advanced Processing and Analysis, the Research Center for Soil and Water Resources and Natural Disaster Prevention, and the Emergency Response Information Center, the Department intergrades the human resources in the related fields to strengthen both the depth and width of teaching and research areas for the students who have been in different fields of professions. After possessing the concepts and skills in environmental pollution control and industrial safety and health, the students can utilize their original specialties to solve problems related to safety, health, and environment.

iii. Industry-academic Collaboration

SHEE is dedicated to reinforce the co-operation between enterprises and technical-vocational education for the combination of theories and practices. Moreover, it is the concern of the Department for promoting research climate and accelerating the upgrade of the regional industries. Co-operating with the industrial talents training, the Department intends to be the cradle in high technologies. Providing study channels for employed personnel, encouraging and assisting teachers in cooperative education, and contributing to technological consultation service, the Department pay high attention to university and industry liaison system. Annually, the Department arranges visiting to the Sixth Naphtha Cracking Plant and collaborates with it for cooperative education.

iv. Future

The teachers have participated in the researches of Ministry of Science and Technology and co-operation between enterprises and technical-vocational education for 142 cases in the recent 3 years (2014-2016). For this, the Department has thus won over NT$330 million dollars of project budget. And this not only earns lots of the project budget and devices for Yuntech but leads all the rest of the departments on the execution of projects, even better than other related departments of other domestic colleges. The Department, in the future, will keep supporting the integration and application of the study fields on safety, health, and environmental protection. Besides, we are to enhance our researches, consolidate the university and industry liaison system, and accordingly scheme out the corresponding programs according to the trend of the society hereafter. Meeting the demand of the government and industry, cultivating superior specialists in safety, health, and environmental engineering, and building theories and technologies in safety, health, and environmental engineering along with the global and regional tendency is the aim of the Department.
